Approaches made to your authority by the public

Publication date:
Thursday 9 May 2024
Request:

Specifically I need, for the calendar year 2023 (1st January to 31st December inclusive):
1. Total number of approaches made to your authority (either through homelessness channels, specialist domestic abuse team or antisocial behaviour team) citing domestic abuse as the reason for need for support.
2. How many of these approaches were made by males. As mentioned above, I am conducting research into male victims of domestic abuse.
3. A numerical breakdown of those approaches made by males by sexual orientation. My reasoning for this request is to establish what proportion of approaches are made by male victims from the LGBTQIA+ sector.
4. A numerical breakdown of those approaches where it was subsequently determined that the male was in fact the perpetrator of domestic abuse.
5. A numerical breakdown of those approaches where the male victim was assisted into either a) refuge or b) B&B or c) refused safe accommodation. My reasoning for this request is to understand whether accessibility of refuge is more common by geographical area.

Response:

1. Total number of approaches made to your authority (either through homelessness channels, specialist domestic abuse team or antisocial behaviour team) citing domestic abuse as the reason for need for support.

634 of those, there were a total of 88 homeless risk assessments.

2. How many of these approaches were made by males. As mentioned above, I am conducting research into male victims of domestic abuse.

48

No disclosure of domestic abuse was refused safe accommodation.  In terms of refuge or bed and breakfast, this information is contained in notes and would exceed the 18 hours in order to look through each case and interrogate.

Jan-Dec 2023 generated 48 cases.  It would take at least 30 minutes to check each case thoroughly to determine what outcome was agreed with the survivor in terms of final accommodation placement.

1x48x30 divided by 60=24 hours

In issuing our response the council have applied S12 of the Freedom of Information Act.

This means that the council does not have to comply with your request if the cost of doing so exceeds the ‘appropriate limit’, which for local authorities is 18 hours.  This applies to the time taken spent locating and collating the requested information
