Up to 2021-2022 there was some waste going to landfill from Thurrock, for this waste we would have had a charge for landfill tax on the invoice from the landfill operator and this was at the standard rate.

In all of these years there was also waste being sent for incineration, we are charged a flat rate per tonne for the waste to be incinerated. After incineration there is some ash left behind as a by-product and this is sent to landfill. Bottom ash from incineration is charged at the lower rate of landfill tax.

However as we are charged one flat rate for the processing it is impossible to say how much or how little of the cost of landfilling this bottom ash is passed on to the council as the lower rate costs shown are not taken on by the council directly.
