Celebrations in Purfleet-on-Thames for Gurkha war memorial

23 August 2024

Last Sunday (18 August), the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community unveiled Thurrock's first Gurkha war monument at Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre. Funded by the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community, the monument, known as The Gurkhas' Memorial Thurrock, is the first to include the names of all 26 soldiers, 13 Nepalese and 13 British, serving with Gurkha regiments who have received the Victoria Cross.

Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Kairen Raper, laid a wreath at the historic event, joining members and representatives from various groups and organisations including Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community, Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre, the community, Cabinet members, councillors and relatives of the Gurkha regiments' Victoria Cross recipients.

She said: "I was honoured to take part in the unveiling of this important monument and lay a wreath to commemorate the Gurkha soldiers whose legacy lives on. Thank you to the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community and the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre for their hard work in making this memorial a reality."
