Thurrock Council's road improvement programme will help to create safer roads and neighbourhoods as well as increasing electrical vehicle charging points in the coming year.
A report approved at Cabinet this evening (Wednesday 15 March) sets out plans on how the council will use a £979,000 Department for Transport (DfT) Integrated Transport Block grant (ITB) to fund a capital programme for improving the borough's road network.
The report also outlines how £1.383million will be used to maintain the highway, including resurfacing some of the borough's most well-used major roads.
Cllr Ben Maney, Cabinet member for Transport and Public Safety, said: "This is entirely financed by two government funding blocks given to local authorities each year to build transport infrastructure and maintain roads.
"Thanks to the ITB grant and the programme we have approved here this evening we will improve the safety of roads across the borough and create safety schemes to help neighbourhoods experiencing issues with traffic as well as provide electrical vehicle charging points.
"On top of that we have a full programme of maintenance funded by the Highways Maintenance Block Allocation for the next financial year that will ensure that our roads, including main routes such as the Manorway in Stanford and Devonshire Road in Chafford Hundred are maintained, along with a number of footway and other highway infrastructure schemes.
"This programme of funded work will help keep the borough moving while creating safer routes for all."
