Budget planning and proposals

Budget 2024

Every UK council faces financial challenges for the 12 months from 1 April 2024. In Thurrock, those challenges are greater than most due to poor decisions taken in the past, for which we continue to be truly sorry. We're making sure those mistakes can never be repeated under new leadership, but we cannot avoid having to take difficult decisions that will affect local services.

We've worked to set an affordable budget for the services we can provide. However, some services may have to be provided with fewer resources, increased service changes or in new ways.

Budget proposals

Budget savings proposals for the 12 months from 1 April 2024 were considered at meetings of Corporate Overview and Scrutiny Committee:

The final decision on budget proposals was taken at a full Council meeting:

Your say

From November 2023 to January 2024, we invited you to have your say about the services that are most important to you. This included:

  • formal consultations on our proposals for home to school travel assistance and technology to assist people at home – services we must provide by law
  • inviting questions online about the other proposed areas of changed listed above
  • drop-in sessions at Thurrock libraries where our staff answered questions and helped residents to have their say

We have to take difficult decisions and value the feedback we receive.
