Preparing for emergencies at home

Help to be prepared

You or your family could be anywhere when an emergency occurs – at school, work, home or out for the day – so it's important to think about what you would do.

Emergencies may happen quickly and without warning. To stay safe, you may have to remain in your home or place of work, or you may have to evacuate the area.

If basic services such as water, gas or electricity are cut off, the emergency services, local authority and utility companies will be at the scene but they cannot reach everyone right away.

Families and communities can cope well with emergencies by preparing in advance and working together.

Prepare

The government's 'Prepare' website provides simple and effective steps you can take to be more prepared. It includes advice on how to:

  • get prepared for emergencies
  • be informed about hazards
  • get involved in your community
