Coalhouse Fort Advisory Group

The Coalhouse Fort Advisory Group has been established to advise on and take forward future plans being developed for the Fort. The aim is to provide additional expert advice for the project and to ensure momentum is continued after the current feasibility project concludes in March 2025.

The group provides strategic guidance and expertise to support the reimagining of Coalhouse Fort, offering insights, sharing industry best practices, and helping inform decision-making processes, ensuring that the project is aligned with broader trends, challenges, and opportunities.

Role

  • To support the development of long-term strategic objectives for the future governance, conservation and development of Coalhouse Fort, and the key indicators of success.
  • To help progress the outcomes and recommendations of the feasibility study which will conclude in March 2025.
  • To receive reports on the progress of the options study to ensure that the strategic objectives are being met and to help prioritise the benefits/outcomes of various options.
  • To support the development and prioritisation of short to medium term plans to conserve, develop and re-open the Fort. And support the scoping of a Resilient Heritage bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for further funding to continue work.
  • To identify funding opportunities and partnerships in support of short, medium term and long-term solutions for the site.
  • To provide constructive proposals and feedback to Thurrock Council in relation to developing plans for the Fort’s future governance, management and operations. Lead on the establishment of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation or similar to support development and restoration at the Fort including transitioning to a new operational arrangement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Guidance: Advise on the overall direction, objectives, and key priorities for the Fort.
  • Expertise Sharing: Share specialised knowledge and experience relevant to the project. Act as a subject matter expert, offering solutions or approaches to overcome challenges.
  • Problem Solving and Decision Support: Collaborate with other advisory group members to identify and solve key issues. Provide input on decision-making processes by evaluating options, risks, and potential impacts.
  • Networking and Connections: Use your network to help the Fort build relationships with key stakeholders, potential partners, and funders. Facilitate connections that can lead to new opportunities or resources.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Assist in assessing the progress of key initiatives and provide feedback.
  • Review and Feedback: Participate in regular meetings, providing constructive feedback on reports, proposals, and other relevant documents.
  • Advocacy: Act as a spokesperson or ambassador for the project in external settings. Advocate for the project goals and initiatives to raise visibility and build credibility in the community.
  • Ethical Oversight: Ensure that all activities undertaken adhere to ethical standards, legal requirements, and best practice in the field.
